This curriculum resource is aligned to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for English Language Arts – Grade 2. Each week’s instruction is rooted in mastery of one Reading Foundational (RF), Reading Literature (RL), Reading Informational (RI), or Speaking & Listening (SL) standard.
Reading – Foundational Skills (RF)
RF.1.2 – Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes)
RF.1.2b – Orally produce single-syllable words by blending phonemes, including consonant blends
RF.1.2c – Isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in single-syllable words
RF.1.2d – Segment spoken single-syllable words into individual sounds (phonemes)
RF.2.3 – Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words
RF.2.3b – Know spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams
RF.2.3d – Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes
RF.2.3e – Identify words with inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences
RF.2.3f – Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words
RF.2.4 – Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension
RF.2.4a – Read on-level text with purpose and understanding
RF.2.4b – Read on-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression
Reading – Informational Text (RI)
RI.2.1 – Ask and answer who, what, where, when, why, and how questions to demonstrate understanding of key details
RI.2.2 – Identify the main topic of a multiparagraph text and the focus of specific paragraphs
RI.2.3 – Describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas, or steps in technical procedures
RI.2.4 – Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic
RI.2.5 – Know and use various text features to locate key facts efficiently
RI.2.6 – Identify the main purpose of a text: what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe
RI.2.7 – Explain how specific images contribute to and clarify a text
RI.2.9 – Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic
Reading – Literature (RL)
RL.2.1 – Ask and answer who, what, where, when, why, and how questions to demonstrate understanding of key details
RL.2.2 – Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures; determine the central message or moral
RL.2.3 – Describe how characters respond to major events and challenges
RL.2.4 – Describe how words and phrases (e.g., rhythm, rhymes, repeated lines) supply meaning in a story, poem, or song
RL.2.5 – Describe the overall structure of a story, including how the beginning introduces and the ending concludes the action
RL.2.6 – Acknowledge differences in points of view, including by using different voices when reading dialogue
RL.2.7 – Use information from illustrations and words to demonstrate understanding of characters, setting, or plot
Speaking & Listening (SL)
SL.2.1 – Participate in collaborative conversations with peers and adults in small or large groups
SL.2.1a – Follow agreed-upon discussion rules (e.g., gaining the floor respectfully, listening with care)
SL.2.2 – Recount or describe key ideas from text read aloud or information presented orally or through media
